The resort is situated in Kilifi, an old coastal town halfway between Mombasa and Malindi. The property is set on 26,000 sq. metres of tropical gardens and 130 metres of sandy beach frontage on one of Kenya's most beautiful coastlines. In fact it is the Driftwood's unique informal ambience that has made it the popular family hotel it is today. Indian Ocean Lodge was built on a beautiful coral outcrop on the shores of Malindi/Watamu. The Lodge, more like a private house, was built only 15 years ago in traditional Arab style with correspondingly traditional materials and techniques. The effect is continued inside where whitewashed walls, sofas with lavish cushions, Arab furniture, Persian rugs, brass ornaments and Arab chest complete the historical coastal atmosphere. The six bedrooms are large and spacious with wooden louvered shatters to protect guests from the heat outside. Each room has a four-poster double bed with a single bed, all draped in mosquito nets and cooled by overhead fans. The mini bar with its cold drinks is refilled daily and there is a private veranda with wicker table and chairs. All the usual comforts (hot and cold running water) are found in the en-suite bathrooms.
