Island Resorts in Kenya

Being a land that boasts of hosting the world's second largest fresh water lake, numerous lakes on the floor of the Great Rift Valley and yet more waters on its Eastern border (the Indian Ocean), Kenya has no shortage of islands. Exclusive hideaway resorts have been established on a number of these islands and below are some of their contacts: -

KIWAYU ISLAND

KIPUNGANI EXPLORER
Tel:

Overlooking a deserted 14-kilomtre beach on the southwestern tip of Lamu Island, Kipungani Explorer is a dream destination for those seeking a true desert island holiday. After a 90-minute flight from Nairobi, you will be met at Manda Island and transported by boat to the lodge, which is located two degrees south of the Equator. The 14 spacious and secluded chalets sit above the soft white sands of Kipungani Bay, which is Swahili for 'the place of fresh air'. Shaded by the palm trees that line our 600-metre beachfront, the chalets are constructed entirely from local materials, with mkeka grass floors and makuti thatch roofs woven by the residents of neighbouring Kipungani Village. The large interiors are a picture of rustic simplicity, with giant king-size beds and furniture all handmade from local mangrove and palm woods. Each chalet has an ocean-facing verandah with local funzi sofas and chairs piled high with colourful cushions. Amenities include freshwater showers, flush toilets, and separate dressing areas with washbasins.

LAKE VICTORIA ISLANDS

TAKAWIRI ISLAND

TAKAWIRI ISLAND RESORT
Tel:
Fax:

Takawiri Island is situated near Rusinga and Mfangano Islands occupying 10 acres of white beach and palm trees. It is surrounded by water on three sides. The beach on Takawiri Island is unspoiled and white; the water is fresh and clear. There are no Bilharzias, no hippos, no crocodiles, no mosquitoes and no beach boys or curio sellers to disturb you. You can take a walk to the fishing village, climb Mfangano Island, play beach volley, go banana boating, windsurfing, bird watching and fishing. However, the most popular activity is definitely fishing for the giant Nile Perch. Well-equipped boats with professional crews regularly land fish of 100 lbs, and more on light and medium tackle. The less ambitious fishermen can try casting from the shore for Tilapia and smaller Nile Perch. Moonlight dinners, barbecues, bonfire, beach bar and magnificent sunsets are all Takawiri specialties. The four thatch-roofed stone cottages have two fully equipped rooms each. All have a terrace where you can enjoy your sun-downer or a tropical cocktail and just relax looking at the lake. All lighting and hot water is provided by solar power.
